Smarter Nitrogen – Lono’s Proven Role in Drought Survival

As UK farmers face increasing challenges from seasonal drought and climate variability, the way we approach nitrogen nutrition must evolve.

At Levity Crop Science, we’ve long known that nitrogen form—not just quantity—plays a critical role in plant resilience. Our latest research shows that stabilised amine nitrogen, the foundation of our Lono product line, can significantly improve cereal crop performance under water-limited conditions.

Deeper Roots for Better Water Access

In research studies conducted at Myerscough University College and published in the 2020 Proceedings of Crop Production in Northern Britain, wheat plants treated with Lono (SAN fertiliser) developed:

  • Longer, deeper root systems
  • A higher root-to-canopy ratio

This architecture allows crops to draw water from deeper in the soil profile—a critical advantage during dry spells.

Greener Leaves = Stronger Photosynthesis

Lono-treated wheat also showed:

  • Up to 19% higher leaf chlorophyll content than industry standard treatments
  • Sustained photosynthetic activity even under stress

This keeps plants productive and supports faster recovery after drought.

Stronger, Smarter Canopy Growth

We also observed:

  • More upright tillers (+51% increase in angle)
  • Thicker basal stems, which support lodging resistance

These traits reduce transpiration and improve light interception—making crops more efficient and stress-resilient.

Research-Backed Results

Our study concluded that:

“Wheat crop fertilisation in the field with Stabilised Amine Nitrogen will increase grain yield via the generation of a specific amine phenotype.” — Marks, Weston & Wilkinson, 2020

Sustainable Nitrogen Use for a Changing Climate

Lono not only boosts drought resilience—it also:

  • Improves Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE)
  • Reduces leaching and volatilisation
  • Aligns with sustainability and soil health goals

A Smart Move for Cereal Growers

As we navigate more erratic growing conditions in the UK, Lono offers a way to future-proof cereal crops without compromising on yield or quality.
